Boating with your dog
THERE are many boaters who would like to take their dog boating but feel it would be too much of a hassle. The truth is that with a little training and some small modifications most boaters can enjoy the company of their pet on the water. It is estimated that 70% of dog owners who have a boat leave their dog on shore when they are boating. FIRST and foremost all the necessary vaccinations such as rabies, heartworm etc. and medications for lyme disease. Without exception every animal while on the deck of a boat should have a personal floating device with a handle on the top of the dog’s back. This of course is to make it easier if the dog should fall in the water. While most dogs are strong swimmers the condition of the water and the length of time that they may be in it can tire them quickly. Over board drills with your dog are a must. THEN you must acclimatize your dog to being on the boat. This can be done without ever leaving the dock. Your pet needs time to adjust to his seafaring adventures. There are certain prerequisites that you must obtain to make life easier for you and your pet. THERE are various solutions for your dog to relieve himself while on the boat. There will be times that it is not convenient to pull into shore to let your pet off so this training is important to both of you. CAN dogs get seasick? Yes they can so it is wise to stock your boat inventory with medications and first aid supplies. Gravol is a good example of something that you should always have on board. THOSE boaters that have been under the impression that they cannot take their dog with them on their boat should be happy to know that with a little training and patience they can enjoy their pets on board. tedo
